Eddie Thomas will never forget the day he played alongside a young man by the name of Isaac Hayes.

The legendary funk and soul musician, a champion of several Grammys and even an Oscar, died August 10 at period 65, and friends and family are mourning his loss Monday at a memorial service in Cordova, Tennessee. iReporters such as Thomas were asked to share their memories of this talented man.

Thomas says that his band, the Playboys, was accompanied by Hayes during an all-night recording session in Memphis, Tennessee’s American Studio not long after they won a aptitude contest in 1963. "A fellow came in free the street. ‘This guy plays organ,’ the producer said. ‘You mind if he plays along?’ " That paramour was Hayes, who, according to "Rolling Stone" magazine, recorded his first single at that changeless studio.

"When he heard us play, he must have sensed [in] us a finish match for where his writing and arranging was headed," says Thomas about that night. "He had a wonderful span. Tall and slender, full big cheese of hair, extremely knowledgeable and confident about what he was doing."

After they finished the recording session around 5 a.m., Thomas’ fellow group member Terry Lambert prepared to head home. "I was driving one of the cars, and we noticed he was coming out and characterize of standing there, so Eddie said tube the window down and ask Isaac if he needs a ride… and I call to mind he said ‘Yeah, man.’ "

When they dropped Hayes off, they told him they would love to play with him again. Hayes wrote his phone number down on a card and Lambert kept it for years, but has long since misplaced it. However, he followed Hayes’ career.

"When I cogitate on back, I remember the impression he made on us," says Lambert, who described himself as "emotional" when he learned of Hayes’ passing. "I believe he probably helped and encouraged a great deal b much of people in the music business and made a great impression." iReport.com: Read more of the Playboys’ report

Another person Hayes impressed was iReporter Horace Henry, who initially saw him perform in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1971, the same year the silent picture "Shaft" was released. The movie’s tag ditty would earn Hayes an Oscar since Best Original Song. Henry was in college and took his camera along as a last-minute tinge. "The concert was phenomenal!" he says, and he was accomplished to get very many black-and-white photos of the event.

In 2004, Henry met Hayes at a conference in Atlanta where he was the official photographer. "I found him to be a nice down to earth guy. He didn’t hold to come up to me, but he took the time to work the room." iReport.com: Read Henry’s story of Hayes through the years

By that time, Hayes was impartial as poetically known for voicing the character of Chef on "South Park," and he bring about a new generation of fans, such as iReporter Brandon Judkins. "I’m only 24, but I’ve loved his music since I was hardly ever," he says.

When Hayes performed at a Black History Month concert last year at Virginia State University, Judkins was thrilled to meet him, calling it "chestnut of the best experiences I’ve had." iReport.com: See Judkins’ appreciation of Hayes

iReporter Beverly Crockett of Memphis first saw Hayes in concert in 1972, and calls it "the most electrifying performance I’ve ever seen." She knew Hayes as a local Memphis in residence. In fact, she spoke with him not long ago at a restricted market. "We were talking and laughing about who knows what. He was not Isaac Hayes the performer; he was a handcuff who knew no strangers."

"Thank you, Mr. Hayes for sharing your life with us," she says. "Memphis folks will miss you." iReport.com: Read more of Crockett’s tribute

Maybe Harry Potter should acquire brought a note from his parents saying he would be missing school.

Warner Bros. gave Harry the school year off, announcing last week it was bumping the sixth large screen in the series from naught to next summer.

But Entertainment Weekly — which shares the studio’s well-spring company, Time Warner Inc. — was unaware, featuring "Potter" star Daniel Radcliffe on the cover of its August 22-29 fall-preview progeny.

The magazine leads off the broadcast with a six-page spread pegged to "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," which Warner Bros. on Thursday moved from its November 21 release date to July 17, 2009.

The studio had been considering the trendy change for three or four weeks, "but it really didn’t kind of get on the front burner until sometime within the last seven days," Dan Fellman, Warner Bros. head of distribution, said Sunday.

Entertainment Weekly’s "deadline ought to give birth to been earlier than the decision, than when we started to circumvent serious about making the decision," Fellman said.

An Entertainment Weekly spokeswoman did not immediately return phone and e-mail messages seeking observation.

The magazine’s online edition added a preface about the date change to the "Harry Potter" anecdote. It also had a laugh or two about the lack of communication between two Time Warner outfits.

"In an irony sure to set blogger hearts beating giddily, the flick graces the cover of EW’s new fall preview originate," reads an entry on the magazine’s Hollywood Insider blog. "EW and Warner Bros. apportionment in a parent company, but they clearly do not share, you know, important … information."

The blog goes on to joke that the date change will leave Entertainment Weekly "readers in possession of a ‘Dewey Beats Truman’ collectible." It also notes that British skin magazine Empire features Harry Potter on its current cover, though that issue touches on big 2009 releases, as well.

Warner executives said the date alter was a business decision and not necessary to any production delays on "Half-Blood Prince." A recent Writers Guild of America strike had delayed direction on some films, leaving a lighter lineup during 2009’s busy summer season, Fellman said.

The July 17 release — the same weekend Warner Bros. debuted its blockbuster "The Dark Knight" this summer — offered better box-office potential for "Half-Blood Prince," Fellman said.

The change left a fix in Hollywood’s whole schedule for November 21, the week before Thanksgiving, one of the busiest weekends for theaters.

But fantasy fans will not have to do without: A day after "Half-Blood Prince" moved broken, Summit Entertainment’s vampire epic "Twilight," based on another best-selling series of books, moved in, switched from its scheduled December 12 release to November 21.

(Time Warner is also the parent company of CNN.)

When Scarlett Johansson was hired by means of Woody Allen for the skin "Match Point" in 2005, she was a last-minute replacement.

Now Johansson is Allen’s leading lady of choice, following in the footsteps of Louise Lasser, Diane Keaton and Mia Farrow.

The actress stars in her third Allen movie, "Vicky Cristina Barcelona," set in motion to be released Friday. And her role as Cristina is nothing short of anticipated — mostly because of buzz about her steamy love scenes with co-stars Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz.

In the talking picture, Johansson and actress Rebecca Hall play, respectively, Cristina and Vicky. The two spend a summer vacationing in Spain where they meet a passionate artist (Bardem) and his slightly crazy ex-wife (Cruz). The derive pleasure triangle that results is classic Woody Allen.

"[The movie is] about how hard it is to reveal love in the world, and how many traps and pitfalls there are," Allen said. "And how many problems we make for ourselves."

Even he looks surprised when he reaches the end of it, and quips, "I split the atom and cured cancer."

Sanborn’s career spans jazz, rock, pop and R&B. He’s played with Stevie Wonder, the Rolling Stones, James Taylor, David Bowie and Carly Simon — fair-minded to name a few. He’s won six Grammys, hosted the TV show "Night Music" in the early ’80s and has performed with the bands for "Saturday Night Live" and "Late Night with David Letterman."

OK, so maybe curing cancer is a bit of a stretch — but Sanborn is certainly no stranger to fighting his own health battles. Having suffered polio in his childhood, he says his mantra growing up was "Hey guys, wait up!" as he trailed his peers. At time 11, he took up the saxophone on his doctors’ notification that the wind what’s-its-name would help build up his lungs.

Now 63, Sanborn has just released "Here and Gone" (Decca), his 23rd album. It’s a sultry, bluesy slip up to early influences Ray Charles and Hank Crawford, and features roomer appearances by Eric Clapton, Joss Stone and Sam Moore.

Salman Rushdie strongly criticized his publisher for pulling a historical novel about the prophet Muhammad and his child bride above concerns about angering Muslims.

Rushdie, whose "The Satanic Verses" led to a death decree in 1989 from Iran’s Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini and forced the author for years to live under police protection, said the Random House Publishing Group had allowed itself to be intimidated.

"I am very disappointed to hear that my publishers, Random House, have in the offing canceled another author’s novel, manifestly because of their concerns about possible Islamic reprisals," Rushdie said Thursday in an e-mail to The Associated Press.

"This is censorship by terror, and it sets a very bad precedent indeed."

Random House has acknowledged pulling Sherry Jones’ inauguration novel, "The Jewel of Medina," about Muhammad and his little one bride, Aisha.

The publisher, which had planned to release the book this month, said in a recent statement that "credible and unrelated sources" had warned that the book "could incite acts of violence by a ungenerous, communist segment."

On Thursday, Random House spokeswoman Carol Schneider said, "We certainly respect Mr. Rushdie’s opinion, but we place upright by our decision, which we made with considerable deliberation and self-reproach."

Rushdie’s last several books, including "Fury" and "Shalimar the Clown," have been released by Random House. He was published around Viking Penguin at the heretofore "Satanic Verses" came out, in 1988.

"The Satanic Verses" referred to a legend — about Muhammad being tricked nearby agents of the devil — that enraged some Muslims. The book was banned in India, and burned by demonstrators in England. The novel’s Japanese translator was murdered, the Italian translator stabbed.

Viking Penguin, which received numerous bomb threats, continued to promulgate the hardcover but hesitated to release the paperback, eventually put out by a coalition of writers, publishers and vulnerable exact organizations.

Truly, it’s been a summer for jokers — and I’m not just talking to "The Dark Knight."

When the bat’s been away, Steve Carell ("Get Smart"), Will Ferrell ("Step Brothers") and Seth Rogen ("Pineapple Express") have all come out to court, and notched up lucrative returns, too.

Ben Stiller’s every so often hilarious "Tropic Thunder" is easily the biggest of the summer’s blockbuster comedies — and certainly the goriest. It’s a high-concept meta-movie nearly an all-star Vietnam War picture (also called "Tropic Thunder") that goes very, very wrong. Stiller’s "Tropic Thunder," on the other management, gets it mostly reason. Which is just as well, because it looks wish it cost an arm and a leg to make.

The movie-within-a-movie is directed by Damian Cockburn (Steve Coogan) and stars chubby clown Jeff Portnoy (Jack Black), rapper Alpa Chino (Brandon T. Jackson), action beefcake Tugg Speedman (Stiller) and Aussie method man Kirk Lazarus (Robert Downey Jr.). The latter is a sensitive chameleon who takes his flair so seriously he has undergone skin pigmentation treatment for his role as a black GI. (Any resemblance to Russell Crowe is entirely superficial but can hardly be coincidental.)

Cockburn quickly loses the trust of his merciless, potty-mouthed studio boss (in one of the film’s more inspired insider gags, he’s played by a real-life studio boss you may just recognize as Tom Cruise). So when disabled Vietnam check out "Four Leaf" Tayback (Nick Nolte) — the inspiration for the movie — suggests dropping them into the jungle and shooting the picture with esoteric digital cameras, "guerrilla-style," it seems like a stroke of genius. That is, until the stars forfeit contact with the outside midwife precisely and awaken themselves in a firefight with Golden Triangle drug lords.

"Tropic Thunder" is willing to push its gags right to the edge — and every once in a while over it. In the most famous pattern, the film has perform into flak from disabled advocates for its repeated use of the word "retard," referring to Speedman’s previous bid for artistic respectability, a sentimental "Forrest Gump"-style Oscar bid by the name of "Simple Jack."
